The PTA held it’s first general meeting on Thursday, September 22 and it was a fun gathering of our community to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with food, singing, and lots of laughter.
The PTA worked with some of the kids to decorate the entrance to the school with papel picado and the Parent Support Team led a team doing chalk drawings on the sidewalk. The PTA provided tamales for the pot luck dinner, and dozens of people brought sides and dessert, including rice, beans, pupusas salvadoreñas, squash, salads, pan dulce and more. At least a hundred families enjoyed the feast.
President Elizabeth McQueen and Vice President Erin Dooner led a brief meeting with 1) a treasurer’s report, 2) a review of volunteer opportunities, and 3) announcements on. Mr. Castañon provided translation into Spanish.
Next came presentations by several of the dual language classes, including a hilarious reading of Eric Carle’s De Piez a Cabeza (Head to Toe) by the kindergarten class, a play about astronaut Ellen Ochoa by the first graders, and a lovely several songs by the older grades. Thank you to all the wonderful Maplewood families who came out to spend the evening together celebrating our community!
